Tasting Notes: Grande Reserva was our first outstanding still red wine, fruit of the 1996 harvest. It was also the first wine of the Douro with this designation. Later it was adopted by the Douro region as the designation for its best wines. Besides the 1996 we also bottled it in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014 and finally in 2016, 10 wines in 20 years. The 2016 harvest was an exceptional one in the Douro! We were fortunate to declare two different Vintage Ports, but also to bottle again the Grande Reserva. This has a beautiful dark violet colour, and a very complex aromatic profile marked by ripe red fruits, blackberries and dark cherry. It’s very fresh, with serious but round tannins, and a toasted note complementing the fruit. The final is long and complex, stating that it’s worth cellaring it for a few more years. But as it’s also drinking very well right now, it would be a shame not to get the best of all its irreverent youth.
